Analysis reveals economic efficiency increases timber yields in young stands on national forests, suggesting management intensification benefits.
Abundant opportunities exist on the national forests to increase future timber yields by intensifying now the management of young stands of timber. A study of the economic efficiency of management intensification, recently carried out by the Forest Service indicates that management intensification will return from 3 to 14 percent on 72 of the 96 million acres of unreserved, commercial forest land within the national forest system. Also intensification on the 12.5 million of these "qualifying" acres that are now available for treatment would provide 900 million cubic feet of additional annual yield soon after year 2000.
