Long-term effects on diameter and basal-area growth in mixed hardwoods, revealing cleaning benefits.
Ten years after an intensive cleaning in 11-year-old mixed hardwoods, the 21-year-old crop trees averaged 4.80 inches d.b.h. in cleaned compartments and 3.99 inches in uncleaned compartments. Cleaned crop trees produced 45.7 percent more diameter growth and 37.9 percent more basal-area growth than selected crop trees in uncleaned compartments. Between the 6th and 10th year after cleaning, however, the effect of cleaning on diameter growth dissipated.
