The aim of the study is to search for problematic aspects in the implementation of the tasks of ecological education of schoolchildren in modern conditions. The article examines the foundations of school ecological education in a broad sense: from ecological and humanistic axiology, which every student needs to master in order to form an individual ecological culture, to the problem of improving scientific and methodical conditions of ecological education in the practice of the pedagogical process. The scientific novelty of the study lies in an attempt to concretize the goal of ecological education of schoolchildren – the formation of ecological culture – through the criterion system of the ecological functional literacy concept. The work considers the system of additional ecological education as an example for the implementation of pedagogical conditions in the practice of ecological education of schoolchildren. The results of the study amount to identifying the humanistic essence of ecological education, substantiating the interrelation of the content of the concepts of ecological functional literacy and ecological culture of personality, determining the main directions for improving additional ecological education of schoolchildren.
