Abstract Water supply service flow is an important link between natural ecosystem and human society, and has great significance for the production, transfer and consumption of water supply service. Taking the upper Hanjiang River basin in Shaanxi Province as an example, SWAT model and GIS were used to simulate the spatial flow process of water supply services and water demand at different spatial-temporal scales, and the spatial scope and service flow of typical supply and benefit areas of the basin were defined. The results show that the water supply in the basin is obviously higher than the water demand, and the water supply and demand level of most administrative units is higher. However, with the change of time, the water supply and demand level in the basin gradually formed extreme characteristics. In terms of discharge, the direction of water supply and demand is consistent with the characteristics of topography, and the discharge and flow momentum at the sub-basin scale show a decreasing trend. The results can provide reference for water resources protection and water quantity monitoring in the basin.
