The study examines the effectiveness of electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technology in addressing water quality issues in Sri Lanka's dry zone, particularly in areas affected by chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu). The EDR plant in Kahatagasdigiliya, Anuradhapura district, was chosen for the study. The analysis of water quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, hardness, fluoride, and nitrate, revealed that pH and EC levels consistently fell within permissible limits. However, high hardness in the feed, a common issue in CKDu-affected regions, revealed limitations in hardness reduction despite basic pretreatment. Fluoride levels were effectively reduced up to permissible concentrations in the permeate, while nitrate concentrations remained well below permissible limits. The study validates EDR technology's potential as a viable solution for groundwater treatment in CKDu-affected areas, contributing to the development of sustainable strategies for enhancing groundwater quality in CKDu-affected areas.
