Managing Societal Aspects of Exploration & Production Operations in Sensitive Area: Case in Mahakam Block

Stakeholders are one of the important actors in operations in the Block Mahakam Working Area. PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) has conducted Identification, Mapping and Assessment of stakeholders to determine key stakeholders. PHM has challenges in its operational activities to continue to find new sources of oil and gas reserves through exploration and exploitation to achieve production targets in the mature block Mahakam in meeting Indonesia's energy needs. The drilling and production process can have an impact on communities around the operating area that intersect directly which makes the location/ area can be a sensitive area. Geographically unique, which is a forestry area that administratively records 3 villages in the Mahakam Delta, namely Sepatin Village, Muara Pantuan Village and Tani Baru Village, are included in the sensitive area with a total population of 13,025 people (in 2019). Low income and education levels are a concern for the company. In addition, basic needs such as clean water, electricity, and communication networks are difficult to access. Problems that occur around the operation area can create social jealousy for the local community. This is a special concern to measure the risks that impact the company to determine the action plan.
