This paper looks at the UK government driven response to reaching net zero by 2050 primarily by planting as many trees as possible in recognition of their benefits to the environment. Heatwaves and increased summer temperatures are particularly felt in urban areas so planting typologies and their various benefits are explored. It reveals a missing and forgotten plant typology utilising climbing plants which has the potential to provide a rapid short term solution well before 2050 and transform our urban environments by making them cleaner, greener and cooler.
