Tweetable statementIn the present study, the long-term protective effects of placental extracellular vesicles (EVs) from normotensive placentae in vivo were demonstrated. There was delayed onset and amelioration of hypertension, as well as a reduction in cardiac function after EV treatment. This study also demonstrated a pro-vasodilatory alteration in resistance arteries and attenuated renal fibrosis/small vascular thickening, further exemplifying the therapeutic benefits of placental EVs in the long term.Together, these results provide evidence that placental EVs play an important mechanistic role in the longterm cardioprotective effect of pregnancy on maternal CVD that is reported in the epidemiologic literature.
