We proposed and curated this special section, titled “Computational Strategic Communication Research in a Data-Driven World,” to establish a stronger connection between two terms—computational and strategic—in communication research. We believe CSS to be particularly useful for gaining a more detailed understanding of strategic communication processes and their effects on stakeholders, publics, organizations, and societies. CSS, as an emerging research paradigm, can bring out much-needed and long-overdue changes within strategic communication research, including but not limited to the shift of focus to behavioral and societal outcomes, the commitment to open science principles, and the inspirational pursuit of large-scale high-investment studies.
