A single crystal analysis revealed that the side chain significantly governs the aggregation behavior of these acceptors. Specifically, C8-OC6 boasts a broader molecular framework and tighter molecular stacking, resulting in exceptional crystallinity and a red-shifted absorption spectrum. Conversely, CH3-OC6 and CH3-OC4 exhibit a narrower stacking area and moderate crystallinity. When evaluating device performance, the D18:CH3-OC4-based device displayed superior exciton dissociation and collection efficiency, along with enhanced electron and hole mobilities, owing to improved phase separation in the blend film, leading to an optimal photovoltaic performance of 16.44%. Moreover, C8-OC6, with its robust crystallinity, can be employed as a third component to refine the morphology of the D18:CH3-OC4 blend. This ternary organic solar cell achieved a higher PCE of 17.03%. Our research underscores the profound impact of side chains on regulating the aggregation behavior and crystallinity of acceptors, ultimately boosting the photovoltaic performance of devices.
