Laser marking is well known thermal-based permanent marking employed by organisation as a part of their product identity. It laid emphasis on minimum material removal from workpiece surface with better surface quality characteristics. There are generally two modes of laser marking one with material removal and other is surface modification. The paper presents the generation of elliptical shaped laser marked surface and also to study the influence of process variables in the generation of uniform laser marked surface on stainless steel 304. Experimental results revealed that process variables such as laser irradiation, scan rate, pulse rate, and defocused distance play an important role in achieving better marking characteristics.
