Functionalization of metallofullerenes are critical steps to turn them into practical materials. In particular, regioselective multiadduct formation has been a critical challenge and only a few precedents were achieved among the metallofullerene reactions. Recently we have developed a new multicomponent reaction that gave trimetallic nitride clusterfullerenes an unusual behavior in the crystal solid state with a fixed cluster. Building on the previous results, we have synthesized metallofullerene bisadducts of in a regioselective manner. The regioselectivity is different from the previously reported bisadducts of trimetallic nitride metallofullerenes, and we are exploring the possibility of using the new bisadduct as a stepping stone to form higher adducts, or open an orifice on the metallofullerene cage.
