This article aims to reflect on skills acquired by young people who participated in the “Design, sustainability and reuse of materials” course. The methodological path of the course was the theory of action-in-reflection, with the intention of developing skills based on practice. The choice of the theme of sustainability through design, through practical upcycling workshops with different materials and theoretical reflections, was based on the place where young people live, the Rocinha favela. The concept of upcycling is presented, believing that it forms a bridge between materials accessible in students' daily lives and the broader idea of sustainability through design thinking
