The Cover Feature shows that life as we know it comes into being owing to the peptide bond. The mysteries of the bond are revealed by bond-order analysis. The resonance of the π orbital of CO and the lone pair on nitrogen result in a coupled molecular orbital describing a bean-shaped bond, with a bond order of 1.2. The resonance increases the stability of the bond, and complicates its detachment. A double rotation of hybrid orbitals in the fragment molecular orbital method is successful in detaching peptide bonds. More information can be found in the Research Article by D. G. Federov (DOI: 10.1002/cphc.202400170).
