Significance Despite campaigning on promises of a radical break with the past, the new government has been criticised for being slow to move. Partly this is because of an opposition-dominated National Assembly that could block major legislation. Moreover both Faye and Sonko appear more cautious about moving swiftly than their rhetoric suggests. Impacts There is a longer-term possibility of serious differences emerging between Faye and Sonko. France will substantially reduce its military presence in Senegal. Faye will take the lead on foreign policy issues.
