Introduction In a modern chemical industry where 700 employees work, data were collected from the Occupational Health Medical Control Programs applied in the last 10 years. These show that, in the biological monitoring of 8 chemical substances (e.g. acetone and phenol), as recommended by the ACGIH on TLVs and BEIs, toxicological tests had normal results. However, the annual exams of total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose of most of these same employees showed altered results. Methods The study consisted of collecting and analyzing the results of 8 types of toxicological tests of 132 employees, each performed every six months, and of total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose tests, carried out annually for the majority of these same employees, in the last 10 years. Results In this industry, 85% of operations by control rooms and other measures such as industrial hygiene assessments, implementation of collective and individual protection, contributed decisively to reducing the risk of intoxication by chemical substances. Therafter, the results of 2632 tests on 132 employees, collected over the last 10 years, were normal. On the other hand, the results of the annual tests of total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose, of most of these same employees, showed respectively an average of 34.6%, 27.8% and 18.3% alterations that indicate Dyslipidemia and Glucose Intolerance or Diabetes Mellitus. Discussion and Conclusion As the changes do not occur in biological monitoring tests, but in total cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose tests, a Health Promotion Program has been implemented aiming, in the medium term, to improve these indicators, by at least 25%.
