Before developing an oil sands field, it is essential to evaluate the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) performance in the area. However, reservoir simulation-based performance evaluations in extensive development areas can be time-consuming. This study attempted to predict the economically viable number of SAGD well-pairs and evaluate field-scale performance based on an SAGD performance map. Reservoir modeling and simulation were conducted using Wabiskaw reservoir properties from 28 vertical wells in Field X. Through reservoir simulation, SAGD performance indicators were allocated to each vertical well location to create the performance map. The number of SAGD well-pairs was derived in areas where reservoir thickness was at least 10 m and the net present value (NPV) of the operating profit exceeded $3MM. At a bitumen price of $32/bbl, the performance evaluation results showed that operating 93 SAGD well-pairs resulted in an NPV of $542MM, cumulative oil production of 8,860 10³m³, and a recovery rate of 30% in Field X.
