In the 1960s, a competitive electoral system functioned amid the increasing authoritarianism of Park Chung-hee’s regime. Regional rivalries and the phenomenon of ‘YeochonYado’ were also established. Daejeon, the hub of Chungcheong Province, which includes Daejeon City and Daedeok gun, showed different voting behavior in different elections. Therefore, the election results in Daejeon during the 1960s are an important indicator to analyze the characteristics of the region and the nature of the change in support for Park Chung-hee’s regime. This article examines the results of the 1963 presidential and sixth parliamentary elections in Daejeon, as well as the 1967 presidential and seventh parliamentary elections. Daejeon tended to lead the national trend, while Chungcheongnam-do was relatively free. Within the Daejeon region, the votes of Daejeon City and Daedeok County tended to split. The ruling Republican Party has had some success in presidential elections, but has consistently struggled in parliamentary elections. Voters were sensitive to economic conditions.
