The Cover Feature shows the influence of different functional groups—electrografted onto graphite felt—on the vanadium redox reaction. This is illustrated by graphite fibers immersed in liquid (electrolyte) with the functional groups aminomethylpyridine, aminomethylphenol and butylaniline (from left to right) attached. The spheres represent vanadium ions in different oxidation states (V2+ to V5+). The affinity of the functional groups for vanadium ions is indicated by the accumulation of spheres mainly around pyridine and phenol groups, which have a better activity than the butyl group.
