The line-start operation of permanent magnet synchronous motors is still quite relevant in low and medium horsepower applications despite the wide industrial utilization of inverter for variable voltage and variable frequency supply to permanent magnet synchronous motor. Therefore, this paper presents the dynamic and steady-state performances of the line-start interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. The rotor speed, electromagnetic torque, stator and rotor currents are investigated for dynamic performance analysis while the stator currents, rotor bar currents and torque components are considered for steady-state performance analysis.Different torque producing components in both the asynchronous and the synchronous operation region are accounted for in the paper. Also presented and discussed are the results of simulation in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
