Abstract To reveal the spatial evolution, regional inequality and convergence characteristics of carbon emission reduction maturity in China, the paper calculates the maturities of carbon emission reduction of 30 provinces from 2006 to 2021, and describes the spatial pattern of its average level by using of Arcgis technique. The Dagum Gini coefficient is used to reveal the regional inequality and its source, and the convergence is empirically tested by σ convergence and β convergence. The research results show that the carbon emission reduction maturity has an overall improvement trend in China, but it has obvious non-equilibrium characteristics. The regional disparities are the main sources of the non-equilibrium which the carbon emission reduction maturity had. The carbon emission reduction maturity in the eastern region has σ convergence, while the carbon emission reduction maturities in other regions show divergence. The carbon emission reduction maturity in China shows obvious temporal-spatio β convergence characteristics, and the maturities of carbon emission reduction in eastern and western regions are similar to the country, while northeast and central regions’ are completely opposite. Finally, in order to improve the carbon emission reduction maturities and effectively narrow the regional inequality, the paper puts forward policy suggestions from three aspects: high-quality development, scientific and technological innovation and complementary integration.
