Koroglu – Azerbaijan Folk Heroic Epos

The epos “Koroglu” is one of the most magnificent monuments of Azerbaijan folklore. The history of the epos “Koroglu” in Azerbaijan and writing of the poems of this epos according to the facts known to us begins in the first half of the 18th century (Ilyas Musheg from Tabriz, 1972) and at the beginning of the of the 19th century (Andalib Karajadagi, 1804). In its formation and popularization as the epos has the special labor of the folk singers – ashugs (ashug – Caucasian folk poet and singer). In the parts telling about the trips of Koroglu alone or with some daredevils to the enemy cities in the completed plots the ideas of heroism and freedom are sung. The origin of the character Koroglu is connected with the archetype the son of the God in Turkic mythology. Functionally Koroglu expresses the savior of the ethnos.
