For a newly designed platform, performing experiments to investigate its motion performances is of significant importance. However, due to the dimension limitation of wave basins, mooring systems in deep waters cannot be modeled in the wave basin with a reasonable model scale. To overcome this limitation, hybrid model tests are carried out with truncated mooring systems. Truncation designs for mooring system are generally based on optimization algorithms as they can improve the accuracy of truncation. An effective dynamic truncation method based on golden-sine dynamic marine predator algorithm (GDMPA) is proposed in this work. A truncated design for the mooring system was conducted on a conceptual semi-submersible platform located in the South China Sea at a water depth of 1500 m, and experiments were carried out according to the truncated mooring system. The results are compared with those obtained from the truncated design based on the NSGA-II. It is found that the proposed method based on GDMPA is accurate and robust.
