Subsea Umbilicals are design to supply different functions, according to the needs of subsea production systems. These needs can include power distribution, monitoring, hydraulic and electric control. Ultra deep waters already present a challenge to the mechanical design of the product, demanding a high-performance structural behavior but keeping important properties such as its weight and bending stiffness. Besides the mechanical aspects to the design of subsea umbilical, when the umbilical functions include in same cross section power function, electrical control and optical monitoring, a care shall be taken to the thermal and electromagnetic aspects. Prysmian performed a study to assess the behavior of a dynamic umbilical applied to ultra deep water scenarios, considering the mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic aspects of design. The study presented results that shown that the positioning of the components has a significant influence on the efficiency of the subsea umbilical under application, both in thermal and electromagnetic aspects.
