An experimental design is proposed for investigating viscous damping in oscillatory flow between two rectangular boxes with sharp corners. It is anticipated that a relationship between Reynolds number and damping coefficient can be established through a series of tests with a wide range of Reynolds numbers, which would be of great significance for extending the database from lab scale to full scale. This experiment considers viscous damping induced by both wall friction and flow separation. The experiment is designed to allow global damping to be determined through measurements of flow rate and differential pressure, while wall friction can be estimated through an analytical solution. Particle image velocimetry technology has been adopted to visualize the flow field. In the paper, detailed design of the experimental approach is presented, together with validation of the instrumentation, demonstrating the reliability of the experimental set-up.
