CNOOC Lingshui 17-2 (termed LS17-2) was the first regional ultradeep water project in South China sea. The field development encompasses a deep draft semi-submersible for processing gas that is produced and exported through pipelines and Steel Catenary Risers (SCRs). This paper presents J-lay installation of SCRs for LS 17-2 project. LS17-2 commenced gas production successfully in June of 2021. The J-lay installation was the method of choice for the installation of 10″, 12″, and 18″ risers. This paper first introduces the layout and description of SCRs for LS17-2 project. With the site-specific metocean design basis, this paper presents a J-lay installation design, installation procedures, installation analysis of key steps, and inspection after installation of the SCRs for the CNOOC Lingshui 17-2 field. Using the field’s 12″ SCRs as an example, this paper discusses the key parameters of the field, installation procedures, and the installation analysis to ensure that the structural integrity of riser during laydown, handover, and pull-in is maintained. The maximum top tension and lifting load are also computed to check against load capacity of installation equipment. This paper finally summarized the findings for J-lay installation of risers for LS 17-2 project. The lessons learned from the installation are also discussed.
