Usually, the floating offshore wind turbine (FOWTs) are linked to the seabed by catenary mooring system, and its motion amplitude is significant under the action of wind and wave. If the pitch angle of FOWTs is too large, the efficiency of power generation will be reduced. Thus, it is necessary to study how to decrease the motion response amplitude of FOWTs. In this paper, a time domain coupled numerical simulation program for FOWTs is developed using the vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) method. The program is composed of the aerodynamics module, hydrodynamics module, dynamic mooring module and core solver module (central difference scheme). In program framework, the partitioned bidirectional weak coupled strategy is used to exchange data between each module, and finally the unified coupled calculation in time domain is realized. Based on the established FOWT model, a gyrostabilizer is proposed to control the motion of the FOWT. Firstly, the coupled governing equation of motion of the FOWT and the gyrostabilizer is derived theoretically, then the control performance of the gyrostabilizer on the motion response of the FOWT is evaluated. The simulation results show that the gyrostabilizer to reduce the motion amplitude of the platform is significantly, but has little effect on reducing the mooring tension.
