In humans, an elevated serum concentration of kynurenine has long been associated with negative outcomes in various disease states as well as in aging. However, it has been unknown whether these increased kynurenine levels are mediating the disorders or simply associated with them. This study shows that chronically infusing kynurenine can contribute to the development of hypertension and kidney impairment. The mechanism of this action remains to be determined in future studies.
