This book provides a mathematically rigorous framework for the control of congested traffic flow on highways in various contexts. The authors rigorously state results, prove the stability of most of the closed-loop systems, and illustrate their results by means of numerical simulations. Different boundary controls and sensors are studied for many different control problems, such as multiple lanes, multiclass vehicles, and cascade road segments, to cite just a few. To solve the different control problems, such as output feedback control design, state and/or parameter estimation, disturbance rejection, event-triggering implementation, and shock wave control, the preferred approach is the backstepping method. This approach is compared with other control techniques so that the reader can have a clear perspective of all available control techniques in traffic flow control theory and in their applications to traffic flow on networks. Through its combination of theory, modeling of various phenomena, and the derived solutions to many important control problems, the text provides a valuable resource for researchers working in control of hyperbolic PDEs, engineers interested in traffic flow applications, and also for both instructors and readers seeking a self-contained and complete textbook on traffic congestion control.
