Considerations concerning the attestation of the toponym Ciocana/Ustia Ciocanei from the Bâc river

In the present study, we propose to elucidate some aspects regarding the first attestation of the toponym Ciocana, which designates one of the sectors of Chisinau municipality. After examining the specialized literature, it was found that until now there are no reliable data regarding the first documentary mention of this toponym, most of the known information being with reference to much later periods. Thus, in the context of the retrieval of documents from the early nineteenth century, a summary of a voievodal charter dated 1537 has been identified, which has helped to unravel this enigma.
