Abstract Irritant contact dermatitis remains the most significant occupational skin disease. The potential impact this condition has on allergic and other systemic ill-health effects means that skin damage has much wider implications. Even before clinical symptoms appear this increased risk of other health issues exists, therefore a proactive approach to preventing irritant contact dermatitis has greater benefits than just prevention of irritant contact dermatitis. This presentation will briefly outline the importance of detecting subclinical irritant damage. A selection of techniques will be described that can help us detect subclinical irritant damage so that action can be taken prior to the clinical signs. How best to use these techniques will be discussed.
