Significance The ban was implemented in response to EU and US pressure, as Georgia was a pivotal player in blunting the intended impact of sanctions. However, Georgian re-export of cars remain at elevated levels, with many cars still reaching Russia via members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Impacts Tbilisi will maintain cordial relations with Moscow and exploit the opportunities presented by Western sanctions. Any deterioration in relations with Brussels caused by Georgia's ‘foreign agents’ law will reduce Tbilisi’s compliance with EU measures. The sale of new and used cars to Central Asian members of the EEU will continue to grow rapidly.
