In principle, the researchers agreed that the interpretation of Indonesianis both pre- and post-Independence was more dominated by this ittijāh model. However, what is unfortunate about applying this method is that it tends to be Islamic Indonesia, not Indonesianized Islam. This is since Indonesian interpreters are more inclined to understand the improvement of local culture which is directed at the Qur'an. In fact, if al-Ittijāh al-Adabī al-Ijtimāʻī is defined and practiced in a different way, it can lead to a more flexible, accommodative, and not rigid interpretation of the Qur'an.
