In the wake of the tragic suicide of an elementary school teacher at S Elementary in July 2023, public discourse has largely focused on restoring teachers' rights and authority, often at the expense of students' rights. However, this reactionary approach fails to address the underlying structural issues that contributed to the incident. Rather than viewing teachers' rights as inherently opposed to students' rights, it is crucial to examine the complex interplay between the two and explore solutions that prioritize the dignity of all involved. This study begins by identifying key questions necessary for understanding the root causes of the S Elementary incident. It then traces the historical development of the discourse surrounding teachers' rights, examining how it has shaped perceptions of authority within educational settings. Central to this analysis is the concept of the interdependence of dignity, which encompasses historical, social, performative, and everyday dimensions. By acknowledging the interconnectedness of teachers' and students' dignity, we can better understand why preserving one necessitates upholding the other. Rather than simply bolstering teachers' authority, this study argues for structural changes that foster a supportive environment for both teachers and students. By prioritizing the interdependence of dignity, we can move towards a more equitable and compassionate approach to education, one that promotes mutual respect and understanding between all members of the school community.
