Broadening participation in computing research and initiatives has addressed the longstanding underrepresentation of women, Black people, Latinx people, and persons with disabilities. However, there is limited research on the participation of Black boys. This research paper describes a virtual coding camp for Black boys that focused on app design for social good. The curriculum was based on a theoretical framework for Black boys in introductory computer science. We learned that Black boys cared for their community and had an affinity for coding, which increased their computer science agency and desire to persist in computing.
