The region where the Araguaia River springs is located in the Brazilian Center-West, covering the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. This area belongs to the Cerrado domain and comprises the southern sector of the upper Araguaia River basin, close to the Emas National Park (GO). The relief is characterized by convex, broad and medium-sized hills, and concave valleys, predominantly anthropized due to modernized agriculture. Beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, this agricultural modernization aimed to expand agricultural frontiers, with massive investments in technology and grain monocultures for export. The main beneficiaries are large producers, agribusinesses and multinational agribusiness companies.
