Abstract The order of stress singularity alters based on the situation of the crack-tip in multi-material composites. In this study, singular mode shapes for a crack located in an inclined configuration on a bilaminar interface is extracted using finite element local expansion and then implemented in an extended finite element method with minimal enrichment degrees (Direct-XFEM). Crack-tip enrichment parameters are determined systematically and the reflection of the crack in propagation through the bimaterial interface is captured accurately. Direct-SIFs obtained using complete crack-tip fields in XFEM, properly estimate the local stress state and consequently suggest profound predictions for crack propagation compared with other XFEM alternatives.
