Preface to the Revised Edition (2020)Nearly a decade having passed since I wrote the first edition—and still being alive and more or less compos mentis—I thought it important to bring the book up-to-date both personally and in terms of current thinking about how brains work and how one might understand them. To this end, I have added three new chapters. I remain inspired by the conviction that the way brains work can be understood, and I am pretty sure the conclusion will be that nervous systems are nothing more than an enormously complex skein of empirical associations that have kept animals going strong for over 500 million years and counting.
