With potential disruptions caused by extreme weather events or cyber-attacks, microgrids can sustain critical services without relying on the utility grid as they offer flexible and resilient electric energy locally. This can be enabled by complete observability of the distributed network through reliable wireless communication. Communication performance metrics such as latency, reliability, and throughput need to be analyzed to understand available resilient technologies for various applications of a Distributed Information System (DIS). This paper evaluates the efficiency of 5G communication for time-sensitive applications such as coordinated under-frequency load shedding and cyber-attack detection during the island operation. The 5G communication is modeled that acts as the key factor for enhancing resiliency, monitoring microgrid dynamics, and detecting cyberattacks, and is tested on an IEEE 13-node system. The analysis based on data traffic patterns and available radio channel conditions assesses the need and feasibility of the implementation of 5G communication for the DIS.
