Abstract In many early studies of the value of elementary electric charge (e), experimentalists identified what appeared to be substantial discrepancies among results. Some discrepancies were explained; some were not. This investigation provides evidence suggesting that some discrepancies among experimental findings for the value of e may have been the result of there being discrete, naturally occurring categories of zero-energy values for the constant. These categories appear to be distinguishable from one another by way of a specific, basic equation, showing for the first time, a fundamental mathematical link among seemingly disconnected and discrepant experimental results concerning the value of e. It is further shown that the same equation may help to identify a fundamental equation for the fine-structure constant (α), shed some light on the nature of the logarithmic singularity that emerges in some studies seeking an asymptotically safe Standard Model extension, and ultimately provide a roadmap for solving the Landau pole problem and achieving ultraviolet completion in the Standard Model.
