This paper introduces a comprehensive analysis of magnetic link designs for electric vehicles (EVs), focusing on Printed Circuit Board (PCB) technology on comparison with traditional power transfer coils. With the increasing demand for efficient and cost-effective wireless power transfer in EVs, the choice of magnetic coupler design plays a pivotal role in system performance. The study begins with an in-depth exploration of PCB-based magnetic couplers, evaluating their flexibility, customization potential, and efficiency. Traditional power transfer coils, commonly used in EVs, are analysed for their design flexibility and efficiency. Key parameters such as flexibility, customization, and efficiency are assessed for each design approach. The study also considers factors such as manufacturing cost, ease of integration, and adaptability to different EV models. Special attention is given to the trade-offs between flexibility and efficiency in each design, addressing the challenges and opportunities associated with the integration of wireless power transfer technologies in the dynamic EV landscape. Furthermore, the paper discusses real-world applications and case studies, highlighting successful implementations and lessons learned. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on optimizing magnetic coupler designs, paving the way for advancements in EV charging infrastructure that align with the goals of efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability.
