Historically, soft news and hard news have been conceptualized with a strong binary opposition. Yet in recent years, the lifestyle bent of digital media has seen even lifestyle specialties of politics, crime, and the environment engaging in practices long associated with soft news. Moreover, their implementation–often rationalized as speaking to the core of journalism’s normative mission–necessitates a reconsideration of lifestyle journalism’s essential contributions to global society: contributions that call for reconsidering the rationale for lifestyle journalism’s perceived lesser standing within the field.
