Accurate detection of lung nodules is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. This paper presents a case study employing an enhanced Faster R-CNN model for lung nodule detection in computed tomography (CT) images, leveraging deep learning techniques. A step-by-step approach is employed to systematically analyze various improvement methods' impact on precision, recall rate, and model runtime. Experimentation reveals that resolution adjustment and the introduction of GIOU Loss significantly enhance model performance, with resolution enlargement leading to detailed feature extraction and GIOU Loss improving target localization accuracy. Integration of data enhancement methods from the Albu database and advanced techniques like Deformable Convolutional Networks (DCN) and Online Hard Example Mining (OHEM) further refine the model, resulting in notable accuracy improvements. Comparative analysis with Cascade R-CNN and YOLOv3 models demonstrates the superior performance of the enhanced Faster R-CNN in terms of average precision and recall rates, emphasizing its efficacy in lung nodule detection. Despite YOLOv3's faster runtime, its lower precision underscores the enhanced model's significance in achieving precise localization and detection of lung nodules. These findings highlight the potential of deep learning techniques, particularly the refined Faster R-CNN model, in revolutionizing medical imaging analysis for early disease diagnosis and treatment planning, albeit requiring further integration with clinical applications and ongoing refinement.
