Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare condition that usually occurs due to failure of thyroid gland descent. It occurs approximately 1 in 200,000 people and 1 in 6000 patients with known thyroid disease. While 90% of ETT is lingual, it can also occur in the neck, axilla, heart, ascending aorta, lymphoid, adrenal glands, reproductive, and gastrointestinal tissues. Although most ETT's are asymptomatic, further testing and surveillance is indicated.
