Herein, a series of four chiral amide-bonded H 2 porphyrins containing zero- to three- L-alanine units have been prepared and characterized. Also, the spectroscopic investigations and biocompatibility evaluations of these amphiphilic H 2 porphyrins were carried out to illustrate the relationship between the number of alanine units and antitumor behaviors. Interestingly, H 2 Porphyrin 3 with two L-alanine units has a stronger DNA interaction and cell membrane penetration ability that significantly enhances the antitumor behaviors.
