Nuclear double duty? When coupled with heavy alkali counter-cations, depleted uranium (from nuclear fuel production) in the form of a uranyl triperoxide is a potent material for CO2 direct air capture (DAC). In their Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202301687), M. Nyman and co-workers show how they isolated highly reactive Cs+ and Rb+ uranyl triperoxide materials and how the reactivity of the alkali uranyl triperoxide analogues increases with increasing alkali size, through polymerization in solution and through CO2 DAC in the solid state.
