Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a novel solid state welding process for joining materials. The process is widely used because it produces sound welds and does not have common problems such as solidification and liquefaction cracking associated with the fusion welding techniques.Aluminium alloy has gathered wide acceptance in the fabrication of light weight structures requiring a high strength to weight ratio. The welding parameters such as tool pin and shoulder Geometry, tool rotational speed, welding speed play a major role in deciding the joint strength. In present study an attempt has been made to develop a mathematical model to predict tensile strength with and without tool shoulder geometry of the friction stir welded AA6061 aluminium alloy by Response surface methodology (RSM).
