In this article, we present analyses and implementation detail of 224Gb/s DSP-based electrical transceiver system fabricated in modern CMOS technologies for long-reach serial data communication. We investigate signal integrity performance at 224Gb/s using various modulation schemes with associated error correction codes for realistic channel characteristics, and discuss implementation techniques of the DAC-based transmitter (TX) and ADC-based receiver (RX) from architecture and circuits perspectives. Design techniques for high performance packaging is also discussed. Demonstrations of PAM-4 224Gb/s TX and RX fabricated in Intel 7 (formerly 10nm) and TSMC N5 (5nm) CMOS technologies are presented.
