Introduction Phocomelia is the term used to describe a limb malformation with a fin-like position of the hands or feet at the shoulder or hip joint due to severely shortened or missing tubular bones in the limbs. In addition to being inherited, as in Roberts syndrome, phocomelia can occur as a side effect of drugs such as thalidomide (Contergan).
