Introduction Actinomycosis is a saprophytic infection usually caused by Actinomyces israelii which is found in the normal human oropharyngeal flora. Infections are typically polymicrobial, containing various additional bacterial species. The most common form is cervicofacial actinomycosis after minor trauma such as dental extraction or tonsillitis. Infected tissue contains characteristic granules, tiny clums of few millimetres in diameter. Involvement of the middle ear and mastoid is rare and might be caused by spread through the eustachian tube.
